Dear JCS Families,

I hope that this email finds you healthy and well-rested.  I have been praying for each of your families and asking for God's guidance as we have worked all summer to prepare for this coming year.  I truly believe that good things are ahead for Jupiter Christian School.  Can you believe that the start of school is less than two weeks away?  Where has this summer gone?

The Petree family had a busy summer.  I feel like I ran into many of you throughout the summer while strolling the mall with my boys, taking on a water slide at The Rapids, catching a baseball game, or enjoying a meal while out with my wife.  It's always nice to catch up with my JCS family and to see the look on the faces of the kiddos when they realize I don't live at the school.

While we enjoyed our share of summer blockbuster movies and epic family game night battles playing Settlers of Catan, we had a couple of rather sobering experiences this summer.  The first task involved visiting colleges with my oldest son who will be starting his senior year of high school this year.  We took trips to several colleges this summer and narrowed down the search to a short list of colleges he is already applying for as the summer comes to a close.   I still can't believe my baby isn't a baby.  Enjoy every moment you can with your kids right now.  They grow up too fast.  In fact, I'm reminded of the words of a great philosopher.  "Life moves pretty fast.  If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."  I believe those may have been the words of Socrates, Plato, or maybe Ferris Bueller.

The other sobering experience our family undertook this summer was a mission trip deep into the mountains of Honduras.  I will start by saying that we were absolutely blown away by the beauty of this country and its people.  Everywhere we turned was a picturesque landscape of the mountains.  Everyone we met was warm, welcoming, and generous beyond understanding.  We were also overwhelmed by how many people live in a level of poverty that does not exist in our country and that is not self-inflicted.  It is a poverty that they are born into and from which few have access to the education or tools necessary to escape it.  We were heartbroken by the lack of clean water available to their people and by the number of people impacted by diseases that are easily cured in the states.

God challenged our family with something that I want to challenge our JCS family with this year.  Perhaps the resources and talents we've been blessed with are meant to be shared with more than just our own families.  What if God has blessed us, so that we might be a blessing to others both in our community and abroad?  With this challenge in mind, we will be providing our JCS family with ministry opportunities each month and calling on those who can help to come alongside a ministry seeking to help others both locally and abroad.  This month, we will be collecting gently used backpacks and men's shorts for a ministry called LAHIA (Love And Hope In Action).  LAHIA is a ministry that seeks to help the homeless by providing a variety of services to meet their basic needs and support them as they seek to achieve self-sufficiency. This ministry and the homeless community they serve are in desperate need of backpacks (with working zippers) and men's shorts (gently used and all sizes).  If you have recently purchased new backpacks to replace last year's bag or have shorts that you no longer wear, please bring these items to our parent orientation meeting on the evening of August 14.  I will have a collection box available in the gym for those able to meet this need.

I am excited about the upcoming year.  We have a lot of new faculty and families joining our growing JCS family.  Please help me as we seek to welcome them into our school community.  I truly believe that this year is shaping up to be a great school year.  I want to finish by providing you with a few upcoming dates and some important reminders.

August 14
Lower School Parent Orientation Meeting from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

This is a meeting for parents only.  We'll start out in the gym and reveal class rosters.  We'll later dismiss parents to their child's classroom for a meeting with your child's teacher.  This is a meeting that will be crucial for both new and returning parents to attend.

August 15
Lower School Open House from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

This is a chance for students to come to school to meet their teacher and look around their new classroom.  Students are also welcome to bring in some of their school supplies to drop off in their new classroom.

August 16
First Day of School

Students will enjoy their first day of school with their new teacher and classmates.  Remember, students will need to arrive in their classroom by 8:10 a.m. each day to avoid being marked as tardy.  Try to establish those new sleep patterns soon.

As our summer comes to a close, please be sure to visit our website for a few items.  First, you will want to be sure that you have summer reading completed.  Secondly, you will find both a supply list and an updated school calendar on the website.  Next, if your child has any urgent medical needs or allergies that the clinic should know about, please contact our school nurses in the coming week to set up an appointment.  Finally, don't forget to check to make sure that your school uniform fits properly.  You still have a little time left to get down to Harris School Uniforms if you've hit an unexpected growth spurt over the summer.

All the above parent resources are on the JCS website under the Parents Tab at www.jupiterchristian.org for important information such as:

School Calendar
School Supplies
Summer Reading
School Uniforms
Extended Care
PlusPortals – Besides the website, this is the main source of communication between the school and home.

Please look at the school calendar on the JCS website noting important dates. This calendar will be updated throughout the year, so please check back often.

I can't wait to see you all in a couple of weeks.  God bless you and your family as you enjoy the final days of summer!

Sincerely,

Caleb Petree, Lower School Principal
